SUPPORTING RESEARCH AND EDUCATION
PHILANTHROPIC ACTIVITIES

From time to time, ATT Metrology is able to donate personnel and resources to advance worthy causes for research or education. Here are just a few of the exciting and worthwhile opportunities we've had:

Maglev, Inc., Scan of Tyrannosaurus Rex Exhibit

In 2004, ATT supported Maglev, Inc., with a Scan of the T-Rex Exhibit at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Steve Hand, Senior Metrologist with Maglev, Inc., said the following:

"All of us at Maglev, Inc. would like to thank ATT Metrology for the help you gave our T-Rex project. We never imagined the turnout would be so great and we would like you all to know your efforts contributed to the success of this historical measurement. The outcome of the scan was much better than we had imagined due mainly to the support of professionals like you. The equipment did a great job of acquiring data and the accuracy was below 91 microns (the thickness of a piece of paper)."

"The partnership proved that science and technology - combined with a little imagination - can help museums preserve and promote one of the earth's most valued artifacts. This demonstration of accuracy in measurement, scanning capability and rapid manufacture will not only help revolutionize the field of paleontology, but will benefit generations of dinosaur lovers for eras to come."

Assisted the University of Arizona

In 2003, ATT had the pleasure of assisting The University of Arizona investigate the viability of a laser tracker system to be used as a tool in their Optical Shop. Dr. Jim Burge said the following: "We would like to thank you for the donation of your time and access to the equipment that allowed us to do some investigations...We enjoyed meeting your team and visiting your site. Your hospitality and expertise with the laser tracker system was very much appreciated. We look forward to working with you in the future."

W.M. Keck Observatory Large Telescope Operation

Also, ATT has had several opportunities to assist The W.M. Keck Observatory, located on the Big Island of Hawaii, with their large telescope operation.  Frederic H. Chaffee, Director, wrote:

"On behalf of the Keck Observatory, I wish to thank you and ATT Metrology Services for the donation of services to our organization. The measurements that ATT provided are unique and will be quite valuable for many aspects of our operation.   We understand that ATT had to overcome many challenges to make the 80,000 measurements with a high degree of accuracy. Among the challenges were the difficult geometry of the basement and the interferometer beam combination facility. This facility has many obstructions, but the combination of your equipment and the ingenuity of your staff overcame the difficulties. In addition, significant work was involved in making accurate calibrations in the cold temperature of the telescope domes - we cool the domes to the nighttime temperature of 32 - 35 degrees F...We had all planned on the job taking a period of 4 weeks. ATT was able to complete all measurements in less than 3 weeks - a combination of skill and hard work."
